The Calming Box

What is a Calming Box?

Being a mother of two toddler girls. One 5 year old and the other is 2 years. These years are a time of innocent fun, loads of exploring and curiosity and also the time of an explosion of emotions.

I was in search of finding a way to settle the tension in the shared space when one of us explodes (I say “us” because I am too need to figure out how to my regulate emotions.) After some research, I found an emotion chart. I found a weighted blanket (which is on our list just a bit too pricey at the minute) and also a calming box.

The calming box interested me because it was something I could probably put together with items I had in our house already. Here are the items we have in our box:

Our Feelings chart with pegs

Feathers - controls the breath

Crayons - coloring is a way of expression

Musical Instruments - way of expression

Yoga cards - Got off of Amazon “yoga cards for kids”

Play Doh - self explanatory

Water bottle with buttons (not shown) - can use sand, color dye with some sort of oil, etc. This is a sensory activity along with the play doh

Lavender Pouches - the girls put it over their eyes when they lay down for a second. Allows them to stop and have a second to them self.

So what I’ve done is just put all these activities in one box. Grouped them together so when one of us does have an emotional outburst we just grab the box and go.

This box has helped our relationships loads. Having two toddlers makes it quite hard for me to balance out the attention of when one does an outburst and the other who just wants to play. Therefore the box gives out the same amount of energy by getting both of the girls involved. The perfect solution… for now.

Your lavender pouches came from the inspiration of my girls. The pouch is there for you to carry with you in your bag, backpack, keep in your car, or have at your desk at work to hold, smell and remind our self that when life get chaotic and emotions start to flow: I am here, I am safe.

“A Message to Myself” - Pouches coming soon

I’ve put together a little video of the girls and I going through our calming box. Enjoy!
